Borussia Monchengladbach have announced the signing of Per Lockl on a free transfer from 2. Bundesliga promotion hopefuls VfB Stuttgart.
The holding midfielder has been a regular in Stuttgart’s under-19s team this season and had been regarded as one of the club’s brightest prospects. He has signed a four-year contract with the Bundesliga side until June 2023.
In recent years, Stuttgart’s youth academy has produced a number of stars, including Joshua Kimmich, Serge Gnabry and Timo Werner. Last season the Swabians suffered their second relegation from the top flight in three seasons.
Lockl is a holding midfielder who will initially join Gladbach’s under-23 side. The Foals already have two young and talented players in the holding midfield role in their first team – Florian Neuhaus and Denis Zakaria (both 23).
Borussia Monchengladbach are currently battling for UEFA Champions League football next season with a talented team assembled currently coached by Marco Rose, in his first season after joining from RB Salzburg last summer.
VfB Stuttgart were wanting to keep hold of Per Lockl but were unable to compete with the Bundesliga side.
Gladbach’s head of youth development, Roland Virkus told the club’s official website:
“Per Lockl is a very talented player. The way he plays football suits Borussia well. We are pleased that we were able to win Per over and that he would like to join us on the U23.”
Borussia Monchengladbach’s latest signing played nine times for the German U17 national team.
