Player ratings: Mainz 0-5 RB Leipzig

RB Leipzig ran out comprehensive winners away to Mainz 05 on Sunday to leapfrog both Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayer 04 Leverkusen to move into third place.

Timo Werner grabbed himself a hat-trick, his second of the season versus the same opposition, having been a key part of the side that thrashed Mainz 8-0 back in November. Yussuf Poulsen and Marcel Sabitzer also got their names on the scoresheet as the visitors ran riot on the relegation battlers.

Here are my player ratings from Mainz 0-5 RB Leipzig:

Peter Galucsi 6 – Only had one save to make as RB Leipzig dominated the possession and territory throughout.

Konrad Laimer 6 – Registered an assist before going off five minutes before half-time with the score 3-0.

Dayot Upamecano 7 – Shaky start from the young Frenchman who also picked up a yellow card. Barely misplaced a pass all afternoon in a comfortable outing.

Lukas Klostermann 8 – Forced into a couple of challenges and clearances but nothing too serious to deal with.

Marcel Halstenberg 8 – The left-back did more attacking than defending in this one and even tested Fabian Muller in the Mainz goal.

Dani Olmo 7 – Not a hugely influential game down the wing for the January arrival but Dani Olmo did win back possession for his side a few times. Nothing of note in the attacking sense though.

Marcel Sabitzer 9 – A tidy finish to put the game to bed 10 minutes before half-time. Marcel Sabitzer also grabbed an assist and yellow card during an influential 60 minutes before he was given a rest with Wednesday’s game against Hertha Berlin perhaps on the head coach’s mind.

Kevin Kampl 8 – Excellent work to setup the fourth goal, Kevin Kampl was tidy in an attacking midfield role, building up attacks with some precise passing and good dribbling.

Christopher Nkunku 8 – May feel he should have got among the goals but won’t be disappointed with his efforts otherwise. The Mainz defence struggled to keep up with the wide man today, though they struggled to keep track of most RB Leipzig attackers in truth.

Yussuf Poulsen 9 – A powerful header in the first half was only Yussuf Poulsen’s fifth Bundesliga goal of the season but the Dane was in fine form today as he setup two more as the Mainz defence couldn’t handle him.

Timo Werner 10 – Missed some good chances before completing his hat-trick. Timo Werner ended the day with three goals from his eight efforts and his movement continuously found space in the penalty area for teammates to pick him out time and time again.

Nordi Mukiele (50 mins) 6 – Not too much to do but another run out after a two-month lay-off should serve the defender well ahead of the remaining seven games.

Tyler Adams (32 mins) 7 – Looked after the ball as RB Leipzig spent most of the final half hour seeing out the clock with victory well assured.

Willi Orban (32 mins) 6 – The club captain got a run out as Julian Nagelsmann was able to give Dayot Upamecano a rest with midweek in mind.

Hannes Wolf (22 mins) 5 – Rarely got on the ball after coming on in central midfield.

Ademola Lookman (21 mins) 5 – Also saw very little of the ball and no opportunity to get a shot in on goal.
