Borussia Dortmund have today confirmed that midfielder Julian Brandt is sidelined with a lateral collateral ligament tear in his ankle.
The German international suffered the injury following a foul at the beginning of Saturday’s 4-3 defeat at Bayer 04 Leverkusen. As a result, the midfielder will not be available for the upcoming Bundesliga match versus Eintracht Frankfurt and is likely to miss the Champions League Round of 16 first leg against Paris Saint-Germain the following week.
BVB have not announced the severity of the injury or a timeline when the 23-year-old is likely to return. Julian Brandt has been a versatile player in Lucien Favre’s side this season, making 15 Bundesliga starts and a further eight substitute appearances. He also appeared in all six Champions League group stage matches, making five starts.
Brandt had been making his fifth Bundesliga start in as many matches since the winter break, playing a central midfield role. Head coach Favre could decide to use January signing Emre Can alongside Axel Witsel next weekend.
