Bayern Munich hitman Robert Lewandowski will undergo surgery on his groin following the defending champions’ final Bundesliga game of 2019 when they host VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday.
The 31-year-old is expected to be out for 10-14 days over the winter break. Bayern do not return to competitive action until the league resumes when they travel to Hertha BSC on Sunday 19 January 2020.
Hans-Dieter Flick said during Friday’s pre-match press conference:
“We don’t want to lose any time.”
Lewandowski is arguably the best striker in world football right now, scoring 19 goals in just 17 Bundesliga games during the first half of the campaign, as well as 10 in five UEFA Champions League group stage games.
Whilst the Polish international is expected to be back up and running for the resumption of the 2019-20 campaign, the Bavarian giants do have Thomas Müller, Serge Gnabry and even Joshua Zirkzee waiting in the wings.
Bayern Munich trail league leaders RB Leipzig by four points at the midway stage of the season.
