Arminia Bielefeld were ensured they will be top of the 2. Bundesliga table on Christmas and New Year’s Day as VfB Stuttgart were held to a 1-1 draw at Darmstadt 98 on Monday night.
The result means Die Blauen have a four point lead over both Hamburger SV and Stuttgart heading into the final round of fixtures this weekend, before a near one-month break.
Uwe Neuhaus’ side have been the surprise package in the second tier so far this season, taking advantage of recent inconsistencies from the two giants that sit directly below them in the table. Arminia also have a seven point advantage over FC Heidenheim down in fourth place, despite having drawn their last two games themselves.
It was Heidenheim that the league leaders drew 0-0 with this past Saturday, ending a division record seven consecutive away victories. Their season opening 3-3 draw at VfL Bochum is the only other occasion they have dropped points on their travels so far this campaign.
Arminia Bielefeld will be looking to get back to winning ways this Saturday when they travel to Hamburg to face St Pauli in their final game of 2019, before the league resumes over the final weekend of January 2020 and a home match against VfL Bochum.
