Fortuna Düsseldorf have announced the signing of goalkeeper Zack Steffen on a season-long loan deal from English Premier League champions Manchester City.
The 14-time American international officially joined Manchester City this summer from Major League Soccer side Columbus Crew and has been immediately loaned out to the Bundesliga.
Steffen previously played for SC Freiburg’s reserve team during the 2015-16 season. The 24-year-old was part of the USA squad that reached the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup final earlier this month, starting all but one of their games.
The new arrival at the Merkur Spiel-Arena Tweeted:
“I’m Zack Steffen, goalkeeper of the US men’s national team,. We’re finishing up Gold Cup right now, but I’m very happy to be coming back over to Germany and joining such an historical club. Bis bald [see you soon]!”
Zack Steffen would not be expected to compete with Ederson for the starting goalkeeper spot at Manchester City so has been loaned out to Germany to gain invaluable experience.
The American will have the experienced Michael Rensing and Raphael Wolf to compete with in order to be the first choice goalkeeper at Fortuna Düsseldorf this season. The Flingeraner start their season away to Werder Bremen on Saturday 17 August.
