Borussia Mönchengladbach have completed the signing of Breel Embolo from fellow Bundesliga side Schalke 04.
The 22-year-old has signed a four-year contract at Borussia Park until 30 June 2023.
Embolo joined Schalke from FC Basel after Euro 2016 but failed to hold down a regular spot in the starting lineup at the Royal Blues over three seasons.
He is a regular in the Swiss national team where he has 32 caps, playing at both Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Though he has only scored four times for the senior team. He missed this summer’s UEFA Nations League finals due to a foot injury.
Borussia sporting director Max Eberl had the following words to say about the striker:
“We’ve known about Breel for a number of years and obviously continued to monitor him at Schalke. Breel has had a lot of bad luck in the past three years with two serious injuries suffered in matches and we of course looked into his physical condition in detail. We’re convinced that he can make a fresh start here and that we will enjoy watching him in Borussia colours. He is a quick, powerful and deadly forward who fits our squad very well.”
Breel Embolo made 48 Bundesliga appearances for Schalke during his three seasons, scoring 10 goals. He has made a total of 27 UEFA Champions League and Europa League appearances for FC Basel and Schalke combined.
Born in Cameroon, Embolo came through the youth ranks at FC Basel in Switzerland with whom he joined in 2008. He made his debut as a 17-year-old.
Embolo offers lots of pace in attack but has not proven himself as a goalscorer in either the Bundesliga, European competition or at international level yet. At 22, he still has plenty of years ahead of him.
