German international Serge Gnabry has been voted Bayern Munich’s Player of the Season for the 2018-19 campaign.
The Bavarian side are coming off the back of a seventh consecutive Bundesliga title in which Gnabry recorded 10 goals and five assists in his 30 league appearances (21 starts). Robert Lewandowski (22) was the only teammate to score more goals than the winger.
As well as facing stiff competition from Lewandowski for the club’s award, right-back Joshua Kimmich was an ever-present and recorded 13 assists, whilst Thiago Alcântara pulled the strings in the middle of the park and Niklas Süle was a rock at the back.
Serge Gnabry joined Bayern Munich from a year at Werder Bremen after the 2016-17 campaign. The 23-year-old previously spent five years at English Premier League side Arsenal, before being sold to Werder after spending a season-long loan at West Bromwich Albion where he and the Baggies were relegated. Bayern loaned him out to 1899 Hoffenheim last season.
Head coach Niko Kovač had started the season with the experienced duo of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribéry down the wings after taking control of Bayern Munich one year ago.It wasn’t until November that Gnabry secured three consecutive starts.
A combination of injuries to the experienced pair and Kovač’s switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation over Christmas saw Serge Gnabry hold down his place in the Bayern Munich first team and quickly establish himself as an important player in the team.
With Gnabry in the starting XI, Bayern Munich averaged 2.6 points per game, scoring 2.8 goals. Without the German international they only averaged 1.8 points per game and 2.3 goals scored.
