Borussia Mönchengladbach have signed Stefan Lainer from Austrian Bundesliga champions RB Salzburg.
The 26-year-old has signed a five-year-contract at Borussia Park, running until 30 June 2024.
Lainer has spent his entire career to date in Austria, including the past four seasons with RB Salzburg where he made 110 top flight appearances and a further 44 games in European competition.
Borussia sporting director Max Eberl told the club’s official website:
“We are pleased to sign Stefan Lainer. He is a dynamic full-back, with a strong mentality and plenty of experience at a high level.”
The right-back had the following to say about his move to the German Bundesliga:
“I’m delighted that the move has happened and now I’m looking forward to the challenge at Borussia – both domestically and internationally. I want to get the best out of myself here and take the next step in my development. Obviously the coach played a role in my decision, but Borussia are still a massive club with huge potential, which is why I’m happy to be here now.”
Stefan Lainer follows head coach Marco Rose, in joining Borussia Mönchengladbach from RB Salzburg this summer. He becomes Die Fohlen’s second summer signing after 32-year-old goalkeeper Max Grün joined from SV Darmstadt 98 last month.
During his four years in Salzburg he won the Austrian Bundesliga on each occasion as well as the cup three times. He was also a starter as the club reached the UEFA Europa League semi-finals in 2017-18. Lainer has 14 caps for the Austrian national team.
