Wolfsburg to sign Mbabu

VfL Wolsfburg have agreed a deal to sign full-back Kevin Mbabu from Young Boys of Bern before the start of the 2019-20 season.

The 24-year-old has signed a four-year deal at the Volkswagen Arena until 30 June 2023. The deal will officially go through on 1 July 2019.

Mbabu is quickly becoming the first choice Switzerland right-back who is expected to be part of Vladimir Petkovic’s side at the UEFA Nations League finals in Portugal this summer. Both clubs have agreed not to disclose details of the transfer.

The defender has been handed the number 19 shirt.

Wolfsburg Managing Director Jörg Schmadtke is excited by the club’s first acquisition of the summer:

“Kevin Mbabu made a very positive impression on us when we scouted him and reinforced that impression during our discussions with him,. He’s particularly strong and quick, and he’s a player who will fit in well at VfL Wolfsburg as a footballer and as a person.”

Kevin Mbabu is excited to test his skills in Germany, telling the club’s official website:

“I’m really looking forward to this new challenge and the adventure in the Bundesliga. The facilities at the club are ideal for me to keep improving as a footballer at a high level. I obviously know the importance of the number 19 shirt, which Junior Malanda wore. It’s a big honour for me to wear that number. It goes without saying that it gives me extra motivation to give my all and earn the right to wear the shirt.”

Kevin Mbabu came through the youth system of Servette FC in the Switzerland second division before heading to the English Premier League with Newcastle United. He failed to hold down a regular spot at the Magpies and returned to his homeland three years later with Swiss Super League side Young Boys.

The defender went on to win back-to-back league titles in 2018 and 2019 and has gone on to earn four caps for the Swiss national team. He made seven appearances in the Champions League this season, including qualifying.
