Bayern Munich have announced the signing of Lucas Hernandez from Atletico Madrid in a club record €80 million deal.
The 23-year-old has signed a five-year deal at the Allianz Arena, keeping him at the record German champions until 2024.
Sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic claims Bayern have signed one of the best defenders in the world, telling the club’s official website as saying:
“I’m very happy we’ve been able to sign one of the best defenders in the world, a World Cup winner, in Lucas Hernandez,. Lucas can play both in central defence and at left-back. Moreover, Lucas will continue our great tradition of French footballers and improve our team.”
Lucas Hernandez will officially become a Bayern Munich player on 1 July 2019 when the international transfer window opens.
The Bavarians’ latest signing was France’s starting left-back during their victorious 2018 World Cup campaign.
However, during Hernandez’s medical, it was discovered he has damage to a ligament in his right knee. The good news is that Bayern Munich’s chief medical officer, Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt, confirmed the defender had undergone successful surgery and will be available by the start of the 2019-20 Bundesliga season.
Lucas Hernandez is excited by his move to the defending German champions, saying:
“This is a really important day in my footballing career. FC Bayern Munich is one of the best clubs in Europe and the world. I’m proud to be able to fight for all possible titles with Bayern. I’d like to thank Atletico, the management, the coaches, my teammates and the fans for 12 wonderful years. Atletico will always remain a part of me. Now I’m looking forward to taking the next step with FC Bayern.”
Lucas Hernandez has been with Atletico Madrid since he was 11 years old, coming through the youth teams and going on to make 110 appearances in all competitions since his debut in the first team since the 2014-15 season.
