Player Ratings: Bayern Munich 3-1 Hoffenheim

Bayern Munich kicked off the 2018-19 Bundesliga season with a 3-1 victory over 1899 Hoffenheim at the Allianz Arena on Friday night.

Thomas Müller headed home the first goal of the new season in the first half after the German forward found space in the six-yard box from a Joshua Kimmich corner.

Hoffenheim equalised just before the hour against the run of play through Ádám Szalai with a fine finish across Manuel Neuer.

The defending champions scored twice in the final 10 minutes to win the game.  The first a controversial retaken penalty.  Robert Lewandowski had seen his fist effort saved by Oliver Baumann before Arjen Robben tapped home the rebound.  However, VAR intervened and the goal was wiped off as the Dutch international had encroached before the penalty had been taken.  However, Lewandowski was given a second chance and made no mistake about it.

Robben made it 3-1 in stoppage time by smashing home Müller’s flick-on from a Joshua Kimmich throw-in.  Minutes earlier Müller had seen a goal disallowed for handball.

Here are our player ratings from Bayern Munich 3-1 1899 Hoffenheim:

Manuel Neuer 6 – Beaten by a well-placed effort from Szalai but otherwise Manuel Neuer’s work were a bunch of comfortable saves.

Joshua Kimmich 9 – Saw more touches of the ball than any other player bombing on from right-back.  Joshua Kimmich set up the opener from a corner and also created other chances with a number of crosses into the box.

Jérôme Boateng 7 – Will be disappointed in allowing Ádám Szalai to get past him for Hoffenheim’s equaliser, otherwise Jérôme Boateng was solid at the back as the Hungarian striker didn’t have another effort all game, and partner in attack, Joelinton, didn’t test Neuer.

Niklas Süle 8 – Good performance against his former club in that Hoffenheim created very little in open play nor from set pieces.

David Alaba 7 – Offered width down the left from full-back but created little and didn’t test Oliver Baumann himself.

Javi Martínez 8 – Calm in possession and protected his back four very well with tackles and winning aerial duels before being replaced for the final quarter of the game by Leon Goretzka as Bayern went in search for a winner.

Kingsley Coman 6 – Carried off in the opening moments of the second half with what looked like a a bad foot injury following a slide tackle from Nico Schulz near the corner flag.

Thomas Müller 9 – A man of the match performance from the Bayern Munich star who opened the scoring with a close range header from a corner, later setting up Arjen Robben for the hosts third.  Thomas Müller created a couple more chances and was good in possession.

Thiago Alcântara 7 – Kept the ball ticking over in midfield as Thiago Alcântara does.  And does very well.

Franck Ribéry 7 – A couple of nice runs down the left wing, notably winning the corner from which Niko Kovač’s side opener the scoring.

Robert Lewandowski 7 – A frustrating game for the striker who didn’t have his shooting boots on until his second attempt penalty.  Robert Lewandowski did get himself in some goalscoring chances and create the odd chance for a teammate.

Arjen Robben (42 mins) 8 – Very good performance from the experienced Dutch forward who saw an effort go narrowly wide shortly after entering the field before sealing the three points in stoppage time.

Leon Goretzka (24 mins) N/A – Introduced to help Bayern Munich take the game to Hoffenheim in the final 25 minutes with the score 1-1.  Leon Goretzka actually saw very little of the ball.

James Rodríguez (8 mins) N/A – Enough time for the substitution to fire a shot in on target and create another opportunity in the final 10 minutes.
