Borussia Dortmund have won the race to sign Borussia Mönchengladbach star Marco Reus.
The Bundesliga champions had faced competition from Bayern Munich and English Premier League side Arsenal in signing the 22-year old, who girlfriend and parents live in Dortmund. Reus will join up with his new team at the end of the season.
Marco Reus has flourished under coach Lucien Favre since the end of last season, scoring 10 goals already this season as his Gladbach side make an unlikely title challenge having only stayed up by winning the relegation play off match at the end of last season (Reus scoring the vital goal himself).
The young German star showed respect towards the club that gave him his first chance in the Bundesliga:
“It’s important for me to clarify that this wasn’t a decision against Gladbach,” Reus said. “I’ve had a wonderful time here up until now and Borussia gave me the chance to prove myself in the Bundesliga and to develop into the player I am now. I’ll be sad to leave as it’s been such an important environment for me. It was crucial for me to be upfront and honest with Gladbach and not to drag it out. But I’ve decided to take the next step in the summer and I want to play in a side that can fight for the title and give me the guarantee of Champions League football. Dortmund can do that.”
Reus assures Gladbach fans he will give everything up until the last minute of the season:
“I’d love to leave with a title and we’ve still got a chance in the cup. I want to help make sure that we build on our fantastic first half of the season.”
Marco Reus was part of the Borussia Dortmund youth team between 1996 and 2006 Rot Weiss Ahlen up until 2009 when Borussia Mönchengladbach captured his signature and threw him straight into the first team. The transfer fee is believed to be in the region of €17.5 million, with Reus signing a five year contract through to July 2017.
