Werder Bremen eventually broke down 9-man Hertha Berlin with a stoppage time winner at Weserstadion today.
It was the visitors who took the lead inside 3 minutes however. Raffael chipped the ball across goal into Adrian Ramos’ path. The Colombian brought the ball down before firing across goal from just outside the 6 yard box into Sebastian Mielitz’s far corner.
Werder Bremen were on top for the opening 20 minutes but failed to create a scoring situation until midway through the first half.
Clemens Fritz’s cross from the left wing was met by a great leap from Claudio Pizarro who duly headed home. More could have been expected from Thomas Kraft who poorly positioned himself behind the goal line.
Kraft was nearly beat again 10 minutes later when Aaron Hunt’s 20 yard effort crept under him and rebounded off the post.
One of the biggest talking points from this game will be referee Dr. Felix Brych’s performance. Six players finished the game on a yellow card (two for Werder, four for Hertha) and the visitors saw two players sent off for double bookings in the second half.
Christian Lell was the first to go, in the 57th minute. The receiver of a deserved yellow card for tugging an opponent back in the first half, his second was for a late slide tackle.
Only 6 minutes later, Adrian Ramos was on the receiving end of his second yellow card. Petulantly kicking the ball away after conceding a free kick.
Werder Bremen were understandably on top for the remaining half hour with the two main advantage, but they rarely threatened Thomas Kraft.
A few efforts off target, and a couple of comfortable saves is all the Green-Whites had to show for until the 93rd minute.
A Marko Marin corner in the 93rd minute was flicked-on by Marcus Rosenberg into the path of an unmarked Claudio Pizarro to head home from close range. Replays showed Pizarro was standing in an offside position.
Werder Bremen’s 2-1 victory sends them back into 2nd position, 2 points behind leaders Bayern Munich. They travel to Hannover 96 next weekend. Hertha Berlin host FC Köln.
