Papiss Cisse signs new contract – but can leave in summer

SC Freiburg hitman Papiss Demba Cisse has been handed a new contract with the promise that he can leave next summer if he wishes to.

The 26-year old, who was the Bundesliga’s second top goalscorer last season, only behind Mario Gomez had attracted the attention of several of Europe’s bigger clubs, including English Premier League sides Newcastle United and Fulham, as well as Russian Premier League side Rubin Kazan during the summer transfer window.

Cisse, a Senegalese international had declared his intention to leave for a different level, but no club were able to trigger his reported 15€ million get-out clause.

Dirk Hufner, SC Freiburg’s sporting director sounded happy with the solution:

“After long negotiations we have found the right solution for both parties. It was very important for us that he remains another season.”

Papiss Cisse has started this season with four goals despite his team languishing narrowly above the relegation zone.
